Very true. I’ve seen him twice now and he’s scored three goals, so he is doing something right.

The bottom line is I just don't trust Bilic's assessment of whether any player is ready or not. Why should we have any faith in what he thinks?

Re: Toni Martinez
First to say I think Bilic is a busted flush but I do agree with him when he says young inexperienced players like Martinez are unlikely to rescue us from our present run of poor performance. Martinez from what I have seen of him would not inject any pace into the side and that is what we need.

Translating goal scoring from the lower levels is not easy. Joe Cole was a prolific scorer in the equivalent reserves and youth football but not quite the same goal scorer in the first team. He of course could command a place on his all round ability I am not sure Martinez can.

I also think it might really be detrimental to Martinez himself to find himself playing for a struggling side.

However, if and when we get out of trouble then he should get a chance.

Exactly. Just WH fans happy to have a youngster coming through at last...

Re: Toni Martinez
He does seem to be very much a finisher when I've seen him, you won't notice him most of the time and then he'll score

not the worst thing to do if you will only make one contribution though

I remember reading something last season saying Bilic wanted to see more movement better hold up play and running channels etc from him

Re: Toni Martinez
Every time I've seen the boy he's looked bang average. No pace, nothing special technically. Can't understand the fuss over him or that little cunt Oxford.

Rice and Burke, on the other hand...

My point was in response to the get rid of Sakho position in January and the freeing up of a spot for a youth striker or buying in a more ready-made replacement randomly such as Giroud (I know he didn't want to come in the summer).

The point Bilic is making is your point ...that seasoned experienced well paid (and on paper capable) strikers are ahead of Martinez (again see his oxford utd record on loan)

"all the anti-Bilic feeling is focusing on Martinez not getting a chance but would you pick him over a 30 year old proven premiership striker say Giroud?"

-----------------

Not the point is it because Giroud wanted to stay at Arsenal? Would you pick Martinez over Carroll, Chicharito, Ayew, Sakho, and those forwards that could play up top Arnautovic or Antonio....

Don't worry... Martinez will be given a go
"when we're in a good position"

That'll be next season then when we're in the fucking Championship!

Re: Toni Martinez
You reckon? If we manage to offload Sakho in January, then I'd expect Bilic to bring in someone close to their 30's with Premier League experience. It's what he's always done.

torino hammer 11:11 Fri Nov 3
Re: Toni Martinez
Maybe Sakho will leave in January and free up a spot for Martinez (unless he goes out on loan say to championship level then too......although it's not been a great model for Burke, Cullen and Oxford in recent times)

Sakho can fuck the fuck off.

torino

Hernandez, Carroll, Ayew and apparantly Sakho are all fit

torino hammer 10:47 Fri Nov 3
Re: Toni Martinez
Given injuries and suspensions, there should be an experience based opportunity for him on the bench Saturday but as we all know Bilic is stubborn ....

Eggbert Nobacon 10:36 Fri Nov 3
Re: Toni Martinez
he had an identical record in League One to what Calleri did in the Premier League

So yes would seem to be the answer

Eddie B 10:31 Fri Nov 3

Could he have done any worse than Jonathan fucking Calleri last season?

"There are experienced highly paid pro strikers ahead of him at the moment of whom more should be expected"

There wasn't against Brighton (Herandez was a doubt before the game, Sakho and Carroll were surprisingly out injured), which I think it's most people's issue here.

If he wasn't going to get a chance then, then when is he likely to get a look in?

Re: Toni Martinez
On balance and to the forefront of Bilic mind is he is unproven at the higher level, especially given that he scored I think once in eight appearances for Oxford last year.

1 goal in 15 League One appearances

he got few in cups

He is young and hopefully improving all the time unlike so many wonder kids predicted great things of in recent years ( Elliot Lee, Freddy Sears & Dan Potts Jordan Spence) all playing lower leagues now. There are experienced highly paid pro strikers ahead of him at the moment of whom more should be expected

Re: Toni Martinez
I don't think Martinez should be in the team but having him on the bench v Brighton was obvious

And I don't believe Nathan Holland could have played any worse than Arnautovic did vs Brighton.

The problem is he doesn't want to play players because we are struggling. So keeps the players that are the reason for those struggles
